Early Goal Stands in GCU Loss to Fullerton

September 28, 2014

The Cal State Fullerton men's soccer team (4-3-2) scored nearly three minutes into the game and that goal proved to be enough to defeat Grand Canyon (2-5-1) tonight on GCU Soccer Field in Phoenix, Ariz. The Antelopes kept pressure on the Titans defense, putting three shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net.

"We lost the game in one moment," said head coach Petar Draksin. "It's disappointing that we haven't been able to score a goal. We have to score to give ourselves a chance. We didn't do that tonight. One play was enough for them (Fullerton)."

"Overall, I thought we adjusted well," added Draksin. "We played very well, but we just didn't get it done on the offensive third. The defense and midfield played well, but we just have to score. We have to better on offense."

Fullerton narrowly outshot GCU, 10-9, with both squads collecting three shots on target. Alberto Sanchez Garcia and Niki Jackson each had three shots in the game to lead the Lopes offensive attack.

Goalkeeper Luca Licciardi made his first start of the season, nabbing two saves in the contest.

The Titans' Mitchell Bell sent a header into the back left of the net just two minutes and 48 seconds into the game to put Fullerton ahead early. That score would prove to be the game-winner.

GCU came out on the attack in the second half as they had a number of chances to net the equalizer. However, the Titans defense kept the Lopes off the board for the 90 minutes of play.

"We have taken a lot of notes during non-conference play," Draksin said. "We will be ready for WAC play to start. UNLV is a very strong team, but we are going to be ready."

GCU will now open Western Athletic Conference play when they travel to affiliate member UNLV for a matchup on Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. Fans can follow the action live by visiting www.gculopes.com.
