Early OT Goal Lifts Radford Past ODU 1-0
NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s soccer team (0-4-0) lost a hard fought 1-0 match in overtime to Radford (2-0-1) on Sunday afternoon at the ODU Soccer Complex.
The Lady Monarchs and the Highlanders appeared to be evenly matched throughout Sunday’s contest. At halftime, ODU led the shot count 4-3 but trailed the corner kick count 6-2.
In the second half, ODU was able to create a lot more opportunities. The Lady Monarchs fired off a total of 10 second half shots and eight corner kicks; however, they just could not find the back of the net all day. Old Dominion’s defense made halftime adjustments as well, as the Highlanders were only able to attempt three shots and a mere one corner kick in the entire second half.
At the end of regulation, the score remained even at 0-0. In overtime, it was the Highlanders who struck quickly to end the match. Playing for a little over a minute in overtime, Radford managed to create a free kick opportunity from 38 yards out. It was then and there that Sydney Golden scored her first goal of the season by sailing the ball over ODU’s freshman goalkeeper Meredith Lenox and into the top left portion of the net.
Radford, back-to-back Big South champions, was selected as the favorite in the 2013 Big South Conference Preseason Poll. The Highlanders have appeared in the NCAA Tournament three times in the past five seasons.
Senior goalkeeper Che' Brown earned the 2012 Big South Defensive Player of the Year award and was named the 2013 Preseason Big South Defensive Player of the Year a couple weeks ago. Brown finished the 2012 campaign ranked No. 11 in the nation with an .880 save percentage and a Big South record 13 shutouts. Radford’s senior keeper was also named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's ‘Preseason Top 10 Division I Goalkeepers to Watch List’.
The Lady Monarchs will return to action this Friday, September 6, at 7 p.m. against George Washington at the ODU Soccer Complex.
