Early scores doom Patriot Women to 4-0 loss
MORROW, GA – Clayton State University scored a pair of goals in the opening 12 minutes and the Lakers claimed a 4-0 victory over Francis Marion University, Saturday evening (Oct. 1) in Peach Belt Conference women’s soccer action.
Francis Marion will play at UNC Pembroke on Wednesday at 5 p.m., before returning home to host its annual Senior Day match on Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. against Young Harris College.
Clayton State’s Renee Gillespie scored in the eighth minute and Manoly Baquerizo found the back of the net in the 11th minute as the Lakers took a 2-0 advantage. FMU junior Haley Bigler missed wide left on a shot attempt in the 22nd minute.
The margin moved to 3-0 at the 27:45 mark as Alexis Gipson scored on a header off a corner kick.
The final Lake tally came after halftime in the 58th minute.
Patriot senior Kelly Anthony registered a shot on goal in the 67th minute that forced a save by Clayton State goalkeeper Jessica Charman.
Patriot junior goalkeeper Casey Murakami recorded a career-high 16 saves, a figure only four shy of the school record.
Clayton State led in corner kicks 11-3.
