Early second half goals lifts Titans past Quakers
Danny Karrels (Fr. • Port Washington) and Tony Starnes (Jr. • Green Bay) scored early in the second half as the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 victory over Wilmington College (Ohio) on Sunday (Sept. 4) in Rocky Mount, N.C.
Wilmington College (1-1-1) took a 1-0 lead when Evan Schlagetter scored off a pass from James Attinger just 11:01 into play.
The Quakers' advantage held up until Karrels tied the score for the Titans with a goal in the 47th minute (47:00) of action. Karrels' first collegiate goal came off a cross from Ryan Hanna (So. • Verona).
UW-Oshkosh (1-1) went ahead 2-1 on a goal by Starnes in the 57th minute (56:28) of activity. After receiving a pass from Karrells, Starnes broke away and adjusted his movement to slip a shot past Wilmington College goalkeeper Antonio Trujillo.
UW-Oshkosh launched 16 shots, including 11 in the second half. The Titans were led by the four shots of Starnes and the three of both Karrels and Ryan Redmond (So. • Lake Elmo, Minn.). UW-Oshkosh posted a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Wilimington College totaled five shots, with two of them belonging to Schlagetter.
Trujillo saved five shots in the contest and UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper James Pike (Sr. • Wauwatosa) one. The Quakers also had a defender record a save.
It was the second meeting between the teams, with the first resulting in a 2-2 overtime tie in 2004.
UW-Oshkosh's first two games of the 2011 season were part of the Roger Taylor Classic hosted by North Carolina Wesleyan College. Named to the 11-member all-tournament team from UW-Oshkosh were Starnes and Will Chaney (Sr. • Cedarburg).
UW-Oshkosh takes to the field as a visitor of North Park University (Ill.) on Saturday (Sept. 10).
