Echeverri, Ingham Sweep A-Sun Weekly Awards
FORT MYERS, Fla. – After helping lead FGCU to a 2-0 week that lead to its third straight Atlantic Sun regular season crown, sophomores Santiago Echeverri (Kissimmee, Fla./Celebration HS) and Nathan Ingham (Ontario, Canada/Keswick HS) took home both of the A-Sun’s weekly awards handed out on Monday.
Echeverri became the third Eagle to win A-Sun Player of the Week this season, while Ingham was lauded with the Defensive Player of the Week honor for the first time in his career. FGCU is the fourth different school to sweep the awards this season.
A native of Kissimmee, Fla., Echeverri was the hero on Saturday night in Macon, Ga., supplying the only goal of the game in the 52nd minute to clinch the Green and Blue’s third consecutive regular season crown and the No. 1 seed and host duties of the A-Sun Tournament. It was the game-winner of Echeverri’s career and his second goal of the season, giving him seven points on the year.
Echeverri’s goal was able to hold up due to the play of Ingham and the FGCU defense, as it’s shutout of the A-Sun top scoring team Mercer was their fifth in the last six games. Ingham’s week began with a three-save shutout of in-state rival Stetson in the regular season home finale and was followed by a four-save effort against the Bears.
Ingham, who has logged every minute in net this season to accumulate a 9-5-2 record, is tied for the A-Sun lead with seven shutouts.
FGCU entered Saturday’s tilt at Mercer trailing the Bears by two points in the standings, but moved ahead with the three-point victory to finish with a 6-1-1 (19pts) A-Sun mark. Mercer (11-6-1), who will be the No. 2 seed in the postseason and also receives a bye into the semifinals, finished one point back of the Eagles at 6-2 (18pts).
FGCU is just the second team to win three straight A-Sun regular season crowns since the league moved out of divisions in 1998. Oddly enough, Mercer was the last team to accomplish the feat from 2000-02. Over the Green and Blue’s current three-year run, they are 22-2-1 in the A-Sun.
