ECU Shutouts Houston On The Road, 3-0
HOUSTON, Texas - Senior Caty Butler scored her first goal of the season and added an assist to help East Carolina (8-5, 4-1) to a 3-0 victory over Houston (4-6-2, 0-2-2) Friday night at Robertson Stadium in Conference USA action.
The Pirates scored all three goals in the first half, including a pair in the first three minutes of the match and never looked back. Butler staked the Pirates to a 1-0 lead in the first minute (0:43) sending a shot over keeper Cami Koski's head from 25 yards out.
"We had a great start tonight getting two early goals," said ECU Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth. "Caty Butler's goal was a highlight reel. Then we were able to follow that with a great corner kick goal by Hali [Oughton]. We did a great job managing the game in the second half and Christiane [Cordero] had some great saves in the box."
ECU was quick to answer again in the third minute (2:45) when senior Hali Oughton headed in a ball off a corner kick by redshirt sophomore Danielle Romano. For Oughton it was her second goal of the year (fourth career), while Romano recorded her team-leading fifth assist.
Senior Chrissy Gratz would answer with one more strike in the first half on a pass from Butler and found the back of the net from five yards out for her team-leading fourth goal (12th career).
Pirate keeper Christiane Cordero posted her league-leading sixth clean sheet of the season (13th career) tying her season-high with seven saves in 90 minutes of action. In five games in C-USA play, Cordero has allowed just two goals and posted four shutouts.
ECU will look to stay atop the C-USA standings when it travels to Rice on Sunday, Oct. 7 for a 2 p.m. (ET) match against the Owls.
