Edwards Nets Game Winner in Final Minute to Beat HBU, 1-0
Box Score
Houston, TX - On October 1, the men's soccer team took on the Huskies of Houston Baptist University in their first Atlantic Soccer Conference contest of the season. Courtesy of Omar Edwards' goal with just 22 seconds remaining in the game, the Panthers avoided overtime to steal the victory. With the win, Adelphi moves to 3-4-1, 1-0 ASC while HBU drops to 0-9-1, 0-1 ASC.
The first 45 minutes of the contest was played essentiall even both on the field and on paper with each team recording four shots a piece and having zero corner opportunities. Additionally, keepers Christopher Herrera and Kevin Suarez each made three saves to keep the game at a 0-0 deadlock heading into halftime.
As the clock wound down, either team could not capitalize on any chances due to a combination of excellent defense and goal keeping on each side. The Huskies stepped up their offense and managed to get nine shots off compared to Adelphi's eight while each team had four corners in the second half.
However, just as it looked as if the game would head into overtime, Adrian Sundquist slipped a pass through two Husky defenders to teammate Edwards who found the bottom left corner between the pipes for the game winning goal, securing his team's third win.
Herrera made seven saves in the win.
The Panthers are back in action on Wednesday, October 5 when they host the Hawks of Hartwick College in a non-conference matchup. First kick is slated for 7pm.
