Eleven college players called into U23 camp
U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team head coach Steve Swanson has named a 24-woman roster for the first training camp of the year as the squad will come together at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Carson, California, from Jan. 3-10.
The roster features nine overage players, all currently competing in the NWSL, many of whom had standout seasons in the league last season. The roster features 12 total NWSL players with the remainder made up of some of the top collegiate players in the country, several of whom will be top picks in the January’s 2015 NWSL Draft. Part of the camp will run concurrently with the full U.S. Women’s National Team event and the U.S. coaching staff will be observing training sessions.
The roster includes two players who have earned caps with the full WNT in Sarah Hagen (two caps in 2014) and 2013 NWSL Rookie of the Year Erika Tymrak (two caps in 2013, one in 2014) as well as six more who have trained at some point with the senior National Team: goalkeepers Jane Campbell (Stanford) and Abby Smith (Texas), Chicago Red Stars midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo, Seattle Reign FC midfielder Keelin Winters, former UCLA midfielder Sarah Killion, who will be a top pick in the 2015 NWSL Draft, and forward Katie Stengel, who is currently playing with Bayern Munich in Germany.
Three players from the USA’s 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Team were called up in Campbell, fellow goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland, who set NCAA records last season for UCLA in single-season and career shutouts, and Wisconsin midfielder Rose Lavelle.
Five players on the roster were a part of the U.S. team that won the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Smith (who was a back-up goalkeeper), DiBernardo, Killion, Stengel and Kealia Ohai of the Houston Dash, who scored the winning goal in the Final victory against Germany.
