Fairfield Hands Iona First MAAC Loss, 2-0
FAIRFIELD, CT – The Fairfield Stags used early goals in the first and second half on way to a 2-0 victory against the visiting Iona Gaels. Junior Mariana Jaramillo led the Maroon & Gold with five of the team's eight shots on goal.
The Gaels found itself down 1-0 in the 13th minute when junior Sara Plowman netted her first of the season off an assist from sophomore Melanie Hingher.
Freshman Liz Dumas gave Fairfield its two-goal advantage in the 59th minute. The rookie scored her second goal of the season dribbling near the right side of the box and shooting it past Martinez in net. The Stags goal came on a counterattack just after freshman Lisette Palomo send in a corner kick to Jaramillo, whose shot attempt was blocked.
Iona outshot Fairfield in the game 17-12. The Gaels had an edge in shots on goal 8 to 7, and corner kick chances, 4 to 2. Jaramillo had a total of nine shots. Graduate Erika Flowers had three shots, senior Julia Campagna and sophomore Amber Crispin each had two shots; all three had one shot on goal.
Tonight's game was the first road game for the Maroon & Gold since Thursday, Aug. 24 when they were at La Salle.
The Gaels have the weekend off; they return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 27 against Manhattan.
