Falcons end Patriots’ season with 2-0 decision
MONTEVALLO, AL – Seventh-seeded Francis Marion University held second-seeded University of Montevallo scoreless for the opening 66 minutes, but the Patriots’ bid for a second straight upset of the Falcons fell short in a 2-0 first-round loss in the Peach Belt Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament, Tuesday evening (Nov. 1).
Francis Marion ends its season at 4-13-1, while Montevallo (11-3-4) moves on the PBC semifinals on Friday. Several weeks ago, FMU upset the then 21st-ranked Falcons by a 2-0 score.
On Tuesday, Montevallo outshot the Patriots 22-2 and led 13-5 in corner kicks.
FMU freshman goalkeeper Nick Lucido registered five saves as only seven of Montevallo’s attempts were on frame.
Shane Howard broke the scoreless deadlock at 66:58 when his shot glanced off the post and into the net. Alex Horton added an insurance score at 79:52, with Giuliano Frano assisting on both tallies.
Sophomore Shane McConlogue (41st minute) and freshman defender Ashley Crawford (76th) recorded Francis Marion’s two shots.
