FAU Women’s Soccer Beats Green Bay, Isaac
Fort Myers, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team picked up its first win of the 2012 season with a 2-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Saturday evening in the Embassy Suites Classic, hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University. The match was moved from Sunday due to the impending Tropical Storm Isaac.
FAU improves to 1-2 on the season while Green Bay falls to 0-3.
Freshman midfielder Claire Emslie scored a goal and added an assist to highlight the offensive attack.
The Owls struck first in the 26th minute when junior midfielder Ellie Smith scored her first career goal off a corner kick opportunity. Emslie’s left corner kick sailed to the back post to junior midfielder Marisa Russo. Russo deflected the ball to Smith who scored into the lower left portion of the net.
A few minutes later junior forward Brittney Nash nearly found the back of the net. The Desoto, Texas native flicked a shot from near the six-yard box only to see Green Bay’s goalkeeper Katy Pilarzyk make a diving save.
In the second half, freshman forward Taylor Sorrels hit the left post with a shot from the center of the 18-yard box.
Sorrels would factor in the insurance goal in the 62nd minute when her initial shot was blocked. However, the deflection went to Emslie who fired a shot from 20 yards out to the upper right corner of the net.
Green Bay made it a 2-1 on a goal by Sydney Born with three minutes remaining.
FAU outshoots the Phoenix by a 10-4 margin in the match.
Senior goalkeeper Ashley Lantes made one save to pick up her 11th career victory in net. The defensive unit allowed the Phoenix to attempt four shots.
Offensively, junior forward Brittney Nash, Emslie and Sorrels had game-high honors with two shots each. Freshman forward Natalia Hernandez, sophomore defender Olivia MBala also had one shot.
The Owls will play in their second consecutive in-season tournament, starting on Friday, August 31, against Northern Arizona University in Las Vegas. The team will also play UNLV on Sunday, September 2.
