FDU and Yale Battle to 1-1 Draw
The Fairleigh Dickinson men’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Yale Friday night at University Stadium in Teaneck, NJ. The Knights are now 3-1-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs are now 2-2-1 overall.
Both teams throughout the first 45 minutes battled back-and-forth for an advantage. The Knights had their three best scoring opportunities in the last five minutes of the first half. Sophomore #Liam Cahill# ripped a shot outside the side of the six yard line but was deflected away by Bulldogs’ keeper Bobby Thalman.
Nearly one minute later, sophomore #Michael Calderon# fired a shot at the top of the 18 yard line that just went wide right.
With 90 seconds remaining before halftime, junior #Jack McVey# sent a free kick into the box from approximately 50 yards out and found junior #Tatenda Chimhanda#, whose header just barely soared over the goal.
Three minutes into the second half, McVey sent a cross from the left side and found fellow classmate #Antony Moore#, who then knocked it in the back of the net for his team-leading second goal of the season.
In the 57th minute of the match, Yale’s Marcus DiLallo sailed a throw-in into the box, and Aden Farina-Henry was able to beat Knights’ keeper #Jacob Lissek# from close range to tie the game at one.
The Bulldogs put the pressure on the Knights over much of the second half but the defense and Lissek’s play between the pipes was able to keep Yale at bay.
Late in the second half, sophomore #Nicholas Walker# made a great block in front of the goal to keep the game tied. Eventually, the match headed into overtime.
In the first overtime period, Moore had a chance to give the Knights their third overtime victory of the season, but his shot sailed over the goal.
Moving into the second and final overtime period, Lissek made an unbelievable diving save to his left to stop the potential game-winner by Yale. Two minutes later, sophomore #Badir Sherman# had a chance in the box to possibly win the match for the Knights but was unlucky in corralling the ball.
Yale used one more rush at the end of the second overtime to win the match as they fired a shot off the right post that ricocheted off and found the hands of Lissek.
Near the end of the match, McVey found Cahill for a header that went wide right of the goal.
In the match, the visitors outshot the Knights, 19-15. Lissek made a career-best nine saves in goal for FDU. Thalman made three for the Bulldogs.
The Knights will have a quick turnaround when they travel to Long Island on Sunday, Sept. 18, to take on Stony Brook. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
