FDU Battles Monmouth to Scoreless Tie
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team battled rival and NEC preseason favorite Monmouth to a scoreless tie after double overtime Friday night at The Great Lawn. With the draw, the Knights are now 4-4-2 (1-0-1 NEC) on the season, while the Hawks are now 5-3-2 (0-1-1 NEC) overall.
FDU outshot Monmouth 12-11, which included a 6-0 advantage in the first overtime. The Hawks had four shots compared to the Knights' two in the first half and were up 9-5 heading into extra time. Four of FDU's shots in the first overtime took place in the first five minutes and were either wide or blocked.
Junior goalkeeper Jacob Lissek was tested much of the night and finished with seven saves, three in each half and one in the second overtime. Alex Blackburn made three saves for Monmouth.
Senior Jack McVey and sophomore Nico Wright each had three shots for the Knights. Wright had two of FDU's three shots on goal.
"This was a typical FDU-Monmouth darby," Head Coach Seth Roland. "We competed well, defended in a disciplined and agressive manner and had them on the ropes in overtime but just could not finish them off. We will now turn our attention to Sunday's very challenging opponent, Mount St. Mary's, who is extremely difficult to beat at home."
FDU will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Emmitsburg, Md. to take on Mount St. Mary's, who were 4-0 winners over Bryant on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
