FDU Blanked by Iona, 2-0
TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team was defeated by Iona, 2-0, on Monday night at University Stadium. With the victory, the Gaels improve to 2-3-1 on the season, while the Knights fall to 1-4-1 overall.
The difference in the contest occurred in the 26th minute when FDU was whistled for a foul in the box. Iona's Ignacio Magnanto then buried the penalty kick into the back of the net on the right side to put the visitors ahead 1-0, which would be the score at halftime, as the Gaels outshot the Knights, 6-3 over the opening 45 minutes.
FDU increased its offensive pressure in the second half but could not quite deliver a score. The Knights had two good opportunities to tie the match, with the first coming at the end of the 56th minute on junior Yusuf Hamza (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood)'s attempt that scraped the left post and went out of bounds, and junior Deshawn Forbes (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George's College)' header that just went wide right in the 70th minute off senior Martin Lukaschik (Neubrandenburg, Germany/Sportsgymnasium Neubrandenburg)'s free kick from about 40 yards out on the right flank.
Iona then took a 2-0 lead at the end of the 74th minute on an own goal. The Gaels' Michael Holzer took a shot right outside the six yard line on the left side, and the Knights' Zachary Newton (Mandurah, West Australia/Safety Bay) accidently knocked the ball into the goal in his attempt to stop the shot.
The visitors held a 12-8 advantage in shots, with five coming on goal. Officially, FDU did not record a shot on goal.
Iona's Julian Petrello earned the victory between the pipes and did not have to make a save, while freshman Matthew Weigner took the loss in goal and was credited with three saves.
The Knights return to action on Friday, Sept. 19 when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to face Colgate in the opening round of the CU Inaria Classic, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. FDU then travels to Ithaca, N.Y. on Sunday, Sept. 21 to conclude the tournament at Cornell.
