FDU Dominates Albany 4-0
TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men’s soccer team cruised to an easy 4-0 victory over Albany Friday night at University Stadium. With the victory, the Knights win their third straight match to improve to 3-1-0 on the season, while the Great Danes fall to 2-2-0 overall.
FDU dominated from the opening kickoff and controlled the entire match, outshooting Albany 17-6. For the second consecutive match, the Knights took advantage of facing the backup goalkeeper as Great Danes’ starter Tim Allen missed five minutes because of a cut.
In the 25th minute, senior Jack McVey converted his second penalty kick in as many matches to give FDU an early 1-0 lead as the Great Danes’ backup goalie, Tim Mingione, was beaten on the shot to the left side.
Two minutes later, McVey sent a cross into the box from the left side approximately 30 yards out and found freshman Jan Aubert, who found the back of the net with a shot from eight yards out for his first career goal, which put the Knights on top 2-0.
That would be the score at halftime as FDU outshot Albany 10-4 over the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Knights kept the pressure up and found the back of the net two more times, this time against Allen.
Sophomore Godfred Baafi ripped a shot in the beginning of the 68th minute that was saved by Allen, but freshman Simon Doherty was in position for the rebound and easily scored for his second goal of the season to extend the lead to 3-0.
At the end of the 86th minute, sophomore Nico Wright was taken down in the box and converted his first career penalty kick to cap the scoring at 4-0. The goal was Wright’s third of the season, giving him three goals over the last two matches.
Junior goalkeeper Jacob Lissek was untested most of the night, making one save en route to posting his second shutout of the season.
The eight goal stretch over two matches is the most since 2009 when FDU defeated Central Connecticut State 5-1 and Bryant 3-0. The last time the Knights scored four goals in back-to-back matches was in 1994 when they took down Manhattan 4-3 and Monmouth 4-0.
FDU will return to action next Friday, Sept. 14 when they take on nationally-ranked UAB at the UAB “Soccer for a Cure” Classic in Birmingham, Ala. at 8 p.m. The Knights will then play Memphis in the same tournament on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 12:30 p.m.
