FDU Drops Season Opener to Stony Brook 5-0
TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men’s soccer team dropped its 2012 season debut Friday night to Stony Brook by a score of 5-0 at University Stadium. With the victory, the Seawolves start their season 1-0-0, while the Knights begin their season 0-1-0.
Stony Brook scored seconds into the seventh minute to take a 1-0 lead as Alejandro Fritz scored an unassisted goal.
In the 40th minute, the Seawolves extend their lead to 2-0 as Berian Gobeil ripped a shot to the corner that found the back of the net.
The Knights were outshot in the first half, 12-7, despite having a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Stony Brook took a commanding 3-0 lead in the 57th minute as Antonnio Crespi blasted a shot past junior goalkeeper #Jacob Lissek# for the first goal of the second half.
The Seawolves tacked on a pair of own goals in the 78th and 82nd minutes to end the contest with a 5-0 victory.
The visitors outshot FDU, 16-11, while both teams took four shots in the final 45 minutes.
Lissek fell one short of a career high with eight saves with seven coming in the first half. Stony Brook keeper Carlos Villa turned away four shots from the Knights.
“That was an old fashioned butt-kicking,” Head Coach #Seth Roland# said. “A little bit of humility can be a good thing now and then. We are not fit enough as a team, and they exposed us in every way. How we respond to this will go a long way to determine how we will do in our upcoming games. If we simply allow it to demoralize us, we will have problems. If we use it to motivate us, work harder, get fitter and be sharper, maybe it won’t be a terrible thing.”
FDU will return to action on Tuesday, Aug. 28 with a home match against Lafayette. Kickoff at University Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
