FDU Falls Short in Upset Attempt at Monmouth
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- Despite a valiant effort in goal by senior goalkeeper Sage DoVale, the Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team could not pull the upset on the road Sunday night, as the Knights fell to in-state rival Monmouth, 1-0, at the Great Lawn. The Hawks, who came in ranked as the No. 10 team in the NSCAA Northeast Poll, improve to 6-1-0 with the victory, while FDU falls to 3-4-0 overall.
The difference in the game came in the 80th minute when the home team finally beat DoVale. Monmouth's Dana Costello found Monique Plesica for the lone goal of the contest.
The Hawks held a commanding 13-3 lead in shots. DoVale was given credit for five saves but controlled the box all night long. She also made a great save on a penalty kick in the 38th minute of the first half.
All three of the Knights' shots were on goal. Sophomore Amanda Goulet had two, while freshman Connie Lewis was denied on the other by Monmouth goalkeeper Ashley Lewis.
FDU will continue its four-game road swing when it travels to Burlington, Vt. to take on Vermont for a 3:30 p.m. contest on Friday, Sept. 20.
