FDU Posts 2-0 Shutout at CCSU
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men’ soccer team picked up three more points in Northeast Conference play with an impressive 2-0 win at Central Connecticut State Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Knights extend their winning streak to three games and improve to 7-4-2 (4-0-1 NEC) on the season, while the Blue Devils fall to 5-6-2 (3-1-1 NEC) overall.
Coming into the match, both teams had identical conference records and shared first place with 10 points. FDU used two first half goals and never looked back to take sole possession of first place in the NEC with 13 points.
Nineteen minutes into the match, senior Jeffrey Barrenchea sent a cross from the right side of the box and found sophomore Nico Wright, who placed the ball into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead.
In the 30th minute, freshman Jan Aubert broke free down the left side and fired a shot for his third career goal to extend the lead to 2-0.
Junior goalkeeper Jacob Lissek made the lead stand for back-to-back shutouts and now has four on the season. He made one save each half en route to improving his record to 7-2-2 on the year. Lissek now has 15 career shutouts, which is fourth all-time in program history.
Each team recorded eight shots on goal with FDU holding a 5-3 edge over the first 45 minutes. CCSU dominated in corner kicks 7-2.
The Blue Devils’ Anthony Occhialini was charged with the loss in goal and made the only save of the day for CCSU before being pulled in the 70th minute for James Perkins.
“This was an extremely solid effort by the guys,” Head Coach Seth Roland said. “We were very sharp in attack, especially in the first half with our two goals and another unlucky shot that hit both posts before being cleared. Defensively as a team, we were rock solid, and it was great to get our second clean sheet in a row and third in four games. It was important to come away with three points today and six for the weekend.”
The Knights will return to action on Friday, Oct. 19 with a home match against Saint Francis PA, who did not improve on its nine points in NEC play after falling to Robert Morris today 1-0. Kickoff at University Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will take place after the women’s match between the two schools.
