FDU Scores Late to Down Drexel, 1-0
PHILADELPHIA -- Godfred Baafi's goal in the 84th minute was all the Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team would need, as the Knights hung on over the final six minutes to defeat Drexel, 1-0, in the 2013 season opener for both schools at Vidas Field.
After a second consecutive corner kick for FDU, the ball bounced out to senior David Cornwell , who's cross from the right side was deflected and rolled to Baafi. The southpaw found the back of the net with a rocket of a shot into the upper-left corner from just outside the 18 yard line for the game winner.
With less than 10 seconds to go in the contest, a mad scramble ensued in front of the Knights' box. Drexel was able to get a couple shots off, but one was blocked and one just wide right as time expired.
Throughout the contest each side had numerous scoring chances but could not convert. Near the end of the 27th minute, Drexel had a golden opportunity after a breakaway, but senior goalkeeper Jacob Lissek made back-to-back great saves, first on initial blast and then on the rebound after diving to his right and making the save with his fingertips.
Lissek faced nine shots over the first 45 minutes and made all five of his saves for the contest during that span. He controlled the box over the 90 minutes en route to becoming the program's all-time leader in shutouts with 22.
"What a great way to start the season beating a very good Drexel team on its home field," Head Coach Seth Roland said. "(Godfred) Baafi scored a big-time goal, Jacob (Lissek) made some outstanding saves, and the entire team committed themselves to winning. There is lots to work on of course, both offensively and defensively, but it's nice to open the season this way."
For the match FDU was outshot 14-8 but held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Knights will return to action Labor Day night, Monday, Sept. 2, against Lehigh in the 2013 home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
