FDU Shuts Down St. Francis NY 2-0
TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team took care of business Friday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over St. Francis NY at a powerless University Stadium. With the victory, the Knights run their unbeaten streak to nine and improve to 9-4-4 (6-0-3 NEC) on the season, while the Terriers conclude their season with a record of 7-10-1 (4-6-0 NEC).
With its sixth straight clean sheet and seventh in its last eight, FDU extended its shutout streak to 626 minutes.
The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute on freshman Jan Aubert's fourth goal of the season. Fellow classmate Simon Doherty found Aubert near the top of the 18, who found the back of the net in the bottom right corner.
Less than three minutes later, senior Antony Moore crossed the ball from the right side into the box where Doherty got a head on the ball to sophomore Miguel Escobar, who knocked it in for his first goal of the season and extending FDU's lead to 2-0.
Junior goalkeeper Jacob Lissek made a great save to keep the lead at 2-0 as St. Francis NY took a free kick towards the goal in the 33rd minute, which resulted in a header at Lissek who had to jump and lunge to his left to keep the ball from going in.
The Knights outshot the Terriers 6-1 over the first 45 minutes and held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
In the second half, the defense clamped down on both sides with the visitors taking the only two shots with Lissek making a save early on at close range.
For the match, FDU outshot St. Francis NY, who came into the match as the top offensive team in the Northeast Conference, 6-3, and shut them out for the first time since August.
The Knights' victory sets up a battle for first place on Sunday at Quinnipiac, who defeated Central Connecticut State 2-1 on Friday. The Bobcats lead the conference with 22 points, while second-place FDU has 21. A victory by the Knights would give them the NEC regular season crown and the top seed in the NEC Tournament, which would take place at University Stadium next weekend.
“That was a good win against a very dangerous attacking team,” Head Coach Seth Roland said. “I thought we set the tone from the opening whistle and played particularly well in the first half. Jan (Aubert) and Miguel (Escobar) each scored nice goals, and we were solid defensively. We are eager to play Quinnipiac on Sunday for the NEC regular season title.”
Sunday's first-place showdown will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Hamden, Conn.
