Fechter Fuels CC's Rout of Fredonia State
Fueled by the play of All-American Matt Fechter, Colorado College struck for four goals in the first half and cruised to a 4-0 victory over Fredonia State University in the first game of the 14th Annual Bill Boddington Memorial Tournament on Friday afternoon.
Fechter’s touch pass off a cross from senior forward Daniel Wright led to the only score the Tigers would need just 8:29 into the contest. Junior midfielder Lorenzo Pozzolini buried the shot for his first collegiate goal and put CC ahead to stay.
Wright gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead a little more than seven minutes later. Making a run down the right side, he picked up perfect feed from Fechter in full stride and went in alone against sophomore goalkeeper Mike Schreiner, whom he beat with a low shot toward the near post.
Junior defender Patrick Robinson added CC’s third tally in the 26th minute when he scored his first career goal on a header off of a Fechter corner kick.
A little more than four minutes later, Fechter closed out the scoring when he collected a pass from junior defender Chris Edmonds on the right side of the box and found the net with a shot toward the left post.
It marked the third time this season and the ninth time in his career Fechter has recorded a goal and an assist in the same game. The senior forward has now been involved in 13 career game-winning goals, scoring nine and assisting on four more.
The Colorado College defense also turned in a stellar effort, holding its opponent to fewer than 10 total shots for the third time this season while recording its third shutout. The Blue Devils didn’t put a shot on goal until the 62nd minute and would add just one more the rest of the game.
Senior Forrest Marowitz made one save during 74:34 in goal. Freshman Ian Horne, who played the final 15:37, also stopped one shot.
The Tigers improved to 4-2-0 overall and 3-0-0 at Stewart Field. Fredonia State dropped to 0-6-0.
The Boddington Tournament continues on Saturday when the Blue Devils square off with Otterbein College. The three-day event concludes on Sunday when Colorado College plays host to the Cardinals.
