FGCU Earns Ninth Straight Shutout; Drops Lipscomb, 1-0
October 22, 2011
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The FGCU women’s soccer team remains unbeaten in Atlantic Sun play after a goal in the 63rd minute from senior Olivia Elias (Coral Springs, Fla./American Heritage-Delray HS), to shutout Lipscomb, 1-0, on cold Friday night. The Green and Blue are a perfect 8-0 in Friday night games.
The Eagles earned their ninth straight shutout and 11th shutout of the year to improve to 12-3-2 overall and 7-0-1 in the A-Sun. FGCU has an unbeaten streak of 21 games (18-0-3) in conference action that dates back to the end of the 2009 campaign.
With a victory or tie against Belmont on Sunday the Green and Blue can clinch their second straight A-Sun regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in their first-ever Atlantic Sun Tournament appearance as a result of being the No. 1 seed, FGCU would receive a bye in the quarterfinal round and play host to the A-Sun semifinals and championship game.
FGCU scored the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute, when senior Danielle Faller (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Area HS) made a pass to teammate Gina Petracco (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) who played a nice through ball to Elias who buried the game-winner. It was Elias’s sixth goal of the season and team-leading third game-winning goal.
“It is not easy to win on the road but our team remained strong by coming away with the victory,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “Elias had a big time goal for us after Petracco played a nice ball to her and she finished the goal perfectly. The defense was solid again and I am really proud of the way they continue to dominate games for us.”
The Green and Blue held a 10-1 shot advantage over the 90 minutes of action, including 6 shots on goal. Senior keeper Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla./Armwood HS) posted her 30th career shutout and is now the all-time leader in A-Sun history. Powers hasn’t allowed a goal in nine straight games, including two double over-time affairs with a streak of 872 minutes without allowing a goal.
Powers didn’t have to make any saves on the night, as the strong back line of seniors KC Correllus (Merritt Island, Fla./Satellite HS/Florida State) and Kat Hunter (Safety Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic HS), redshirt junior Ashley Ciesielczyk (Oregon, Ohio/Clay HS) and junior Jennifer Crittenberger (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons HS) limited Lipscomb to just one shot.
Ciesielczyk had a couple of opportunities in the first half to give the Eagles an early lead but Lipscomb’s Erin Zerio made both saves to keep it scoreless.
In the second half, Petracco had a chance to add to the lead in the 74th minute but was denied by the Bisons’ Zerio.
FGCU continues its road trip on Sunday against Belmont at 1 p.m. eastern time at Rose Park in Nashville, Tenn.
