FGCU Moves To #11 In NSCAA Poll
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Riding the nation’s longest winning streak, the FGCU men’s soccer team moved up one spot to the #11 position in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 Poll – the highest national ranking of any program in FGCU’s Division-I history.
FGCU (10-2-1, 2-0-0 ASUN) has won a program-record 10-straight games and moves up after sitting at #12 each of the previous two weeks. That #12 ranking was the previous high for an FGCU team in the D-I era (2007-08).
It’s the fourth-straight week the Eagles have been ranked in the NSCAA top 15. Three weeks ago, FGCU appeared at #15 – four spots higher than the team’s previous regular-season high mark of #19, set three times and most recently last September. This week is just the fifth time in program history that FGCU has been ranked in the NSCAA poll (full ranking history at the end of this release).
Among the teams FGCU is ranked ahead of include: Stanford, Louisville, Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan State and UCLA. The Eagles are the only team in Florida ranked or receiving votes in the poll. Despite several other prominent national polls each week, the NSCAA Top 25 is the only poll the NCAA officially recognizes.
Prior to this year, the program’s previous highest ranking was #14 in the Goal.com Preseason Poll on Aug. 2, 2011. The Eagles are also ranked #17 in TopDrawerSoccer’s poll this week and #15 in the Soccer America poll.
In addition to the winning streak, FGCU possesses the nation’s most potent offense. The Eagles lead the nation in goals (44, next closest: 35), points (122, next closest: 103), goals per game (3.38, next closest: 2.69) and points per game (9.38, next closest: 7.92). The point and goal totals are already single-season program records, far surpassing the previous marks of 35 and 108, respectively.
FGCU’s current 10-game winning streak is two better than the previous program record of eight set in 2010 and 2012. Top-ranked Maryland has the second-longest winning streak in the country at eight in a row, but currently no other team nationally has won more than five straight.
The Eagles are back at home tonight – Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. – against ASUN foe North Florida. UNF (6-3-1, 2-0-0 ASUN) and FGCU are the lone unbeaten teams in ASUN play. The Ospreys were tabbed for a 2nd-place finish in the league’s preseason poll – just four points behind the Eagles – and with two 1st-place votes had the same as FGCU and Lipscomb.
