FGCU's Weck Honored by TopDrawer
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Highlighted by a near record-tying performance, FGCU women's soccer goalkeeper Melissa Weck was named to TopDrawerSoccer's Team of the Week Tuesday.
Weck entered the weekend with a 0.94 goals against average and lowered that to an Atlantic Sun-leading 0.77 following two outstanding performances. The Eagles began the week with a 1-0 win over in-state rivals FIU before falling by the same scoreline to Alabama. The freshman made one save against the Panthers to record her second shutout of the season.
Her most impressive performance came Sunday against SEC-foe Alabama. While Weck wasn't troubled much early in the contest, the Crimson Tide forced Weck to make four saves in the final 10 minutes of the first half. Among her better saves of the entire match, Weck was called upon in the 40th minute after Alabama earned a penalty kick. The California-native made the save, diving to her left to keep the match scoreless. It was one of six saves in the first half and she continued to impress in the second stanza.
Alabama broke through in the second half, finishing off a rebound just a few yards from goal after Weck had made a diving save to prevent the initial attempt from going in. Weck made three more saves to keep the deficit at 1-0. Her efforts allowed FGCU to have one final attempt but a would-be goal was disallowed for offsides. Weck finished the match with 11 saves, one shy of the previous FGCU single-game record of 12 set by Stephanie Powers in 2011. The freshman is just the second FGCU goalkeeper to ever surpass 10 saves in a single match.
Weck raised her save percentage to .833, third best in the ASUN with her performance. In addition, the freshman also broke into the top 75 nationally in that category. Her two shutouts places her among the top 50 in the nation while her ASUN-best goals against average (0.77) is good for 71st nationally.
Joining Weck on TopDrawer's Team of the Week are representatives from California, Virginia, Georgetown, Duke, UCLA, George Washington, Western Kentucky, LSU, and South Carolina.
The Eagles return to the pitch Thursday in Coral Gables when they meet the Hurricanes of Miami at 7 p.m. FGCU then returns home to meet UCF Sunday at 1 p.m.
