LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The Iona College women’s soccer team took a crucial MAAC game against Rider 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Ben Cohen Field.
With the victory, Iona improves to 3-6-2 and 1-1 in MAAC play, while Rider falls to 5-3-2 and 0-2 in the conference.
In the evenly matched contest, the Broncs finished with an 11-8 edge in shots, but the lone tally came from the Maroon & Gold in the 25th minute. The visitors also controlled the set pieces off the lines, holding a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Samantha Fiorenzo cashed in her second tally of the season after entering play moments earlier. Junior Christina Tesoriero was credited with the assist after sending a cross pass to Fiorenzo.
"Conference matches are always a dog fight and I'm proud of how our girls competed today,” said head coach Mike Barroqueiro.
In goal junior Trista Rivera made three save for her second shutout of the season. Rider goalie Jenn Nichols made one save in the final minute off a shot from senior Leah Taylor.
“To win competitive matches you need to take care of all the details. Our girls fought hard today and got themselves a well earned three points in a match where we had more dangerous chances. It's a great way to end the weekend,” commented Barroqueiro.
The Gaels will welcome Western New York foes Canisius and Niagara next weekend to Mazzella Field.
