First Half Surge Pushes Eagles Past Saints
Junior goalkeeper Kamryn Peffley tallied a career-high 10 saves, but that was not enough as Georgia Southern recorded a 3-0 shutout of Siena Women’s Soccer at the Mercer Invitational.
Georgia Southern (2-1-1) attempted 24 total shots, including 13 in the second half, but all three of their goals came in the first half. Siena (2-1-0) was outshot as they only took seven in the match.
The Saints started the match off quick as they tallied two shots, but came up short on both attempts. Georgia Southern got on the board in the 13th minute as Sarah Price was able to beat Peffley after the ball was crossed into the box from Asha Vilaythong. The Saints got a good opportunity off the first corner of the match at the 30th minute, but were unable to produce a goal.
The Eagles recorded their first corner kick at the 39th minute. Off the blocked shot from their first attempt, Juvenia Hylton was able to grab the rebound and tipped the ball in to put the Eagles up 2-0. Just 95 seconds later, Hylton dished out an assist to Nicole Aussin to help put Georgia Southern up 3-0 with just under five minutes left in the half.
Right into the second half, Georgia Southern got off two shots. However, Peffley, who recorded eight of her saves in the second half, was able to stop both. The Saints didn’t get a lot of opportunities in the second half, but had its best chance to score when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 82 minute. Jayanna Monds’ penalty kick attempt floated just wide and kept the Eagles ahead 3-0 as the match came to an end.
The Saints return to action as they take on crosstown rival UAlbany at UAlbany on Sunday, Sept. 3. Match is set for 6 p.m.
