Part of the reason where the MLS SuperDraft has featured diminishing returns is the Homegrown player rule. That allows teams to ink players either directly from the academy, or hang on to a player’s rights when they do head to college. The bulk of draftees nowadays have to prove themselves in MLS NEXT Pro, and don’t sign an MLS deal right off the bat.
Each season, players from college do muster an impact in the right opportunity.
