Five In A Row For Women's Soccer
UW-Whitewater defeated UW-Superior 5-1 Sunday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The win, Whitewater's fifth straight and seventh in the last eight games, upped the Warhawks' record to 9-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-Superior is 6-9-0 and 0-6-0.
Christina Tooren (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) opened the scoring with a Warhawk goal at 15:02, off an Alyssa Chamberlain (De Pere/De Pere) assist. Stacey Schultz (Menomonee Falls/Menomonee Falls) kicked in her first of the season at 19:17 to put UW-W up 2-0 and provide what proved to be the game winner.
The Yellowjackets got their goal, only the only shot UW-Superior was able to get off all game, on a penalty kick at 30:17 from Nichole Casler, her third this year. The teams went into halftime 2-1 Whitewater.
Whitewater's Kaitlyn Fritsch (Monona Grove/Monona Grove) took a shot that was stopped by a Superior defender, but Tooren headed in the rebound for her second of the day at 61:18 to increase Whitewater's lead to 3-1.
Tooren made it a hat trick at 64:39, scoring with another header with an assist from Madeline Lardner (Lockport, IL/Lockport Township) for a 4-1 Whitewater advantage.
Schultz scored her second of the afternoon, and season, off a corner kick by Emily Gerber (DeForest/DeForest), for Whitewater's final tally at 77:09.
UW-W's advantage on the scoreboard was borne out in the statistics. The Warhawks led in shots 25-1 and corner kicks 4-0. Whitewater had four fouls to nine for UW-S.
Tooren, who missed the first part of the season with a broken arm, has scored seven goals in seven games. Gerber's assist, her tenth of the season, ties former teammate Becky Cera's school record set in 2009. It also moves Gerber into a tie with Cera for the school's career record, at 28.
Schultz and Gerber were among four seniors honored on UW-W's Senior Day. They were joined by teammates Kayla Miller (Racine/Case) and Pamela Lisowe (New Holstein/New Holstein).
UW-W will play at UW-River Falls Saturday, October 22, and the final home game of the regular season is set for Saturday, October 29 at 5:00 with UW-Eau Claire visiting Fiskum Field.
