Five Mountain Hawks named All-League
Complete Patriot League Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following impressive regular-season efforts, five members of the Lehigh women’s soccer team have been named All-Patriot League honorees, as announced by the league on Monday. Seniors Alyssa Riporti and Adrian Vitello were named to the first team for a second straight season. In addition, sophomore Sam Miller garnered second team All-League while sophomore Maggie Wadsworth and senior Amanda Stratton were named to the third team.
A first team All-League and third team All-Region honoree as a junior, Riporti has continued to anchor an impressive Lehigh defense in 2017, which is tied for second in the Patriot League with nine shutouts, six of them coming in league play. Named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award, Riporti has started all 17 games for a defense that’s earned league shutouts against Army West Point, Boston University, American, Lafayette, Loyola and Holy Cross. The Mountain Hawks have posted 21 shutouts since last season, just one shy of the most combined shutouts in consecutive seasons in program history (22 from 2004-05). Heading into this past weekend, Lehigh’s stood 18th nationally in total shutouts since the beginning of last season. Riporti, who has played all but six minutes on the season, was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week following Lehigh’s wins at Penn and Temple.
Vitello was also named first team All-League after earning that same honor, and All-Region recognition, in 2016. Vitello has started all 17 games in the midfield, playing a key role at both ends of the field. She has dished two assists, in wins at Temple and Lafayette, assisting on what proved to be the game-winning goal against the archrival Leopards. Vitello’s impact is felt far beyond statistics as she’s an integral part of Lehigh’s efforts, both offensively and defensively.
Miller garnered second team honors for a second straight season. After recording a 0.64 goals against average and 0.859 save percentage as a freshman, she currently owns a 0.56 GAA and 0.881 save percentage. In league play, Miller’s numbers are even better - 0.52 GAA and 0.896 save percentage. Miller has been named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week five times this season, a new league mark for Goalie of the Week awards in a single season. She has recorded seven or more saves on five different occasions, including nine stops at Temple (to tie a career high), eight vs. Boston University, seven at Navy and seven vs. Holy Cross. Miller has tallied 21 shutouts through her first 35 career games and owns two shutout streaks of 340 minutes or longer: 758:34 to begin last season and 348:30 in September of this year (beginning Sept. 10 vs. St. John’s and running through Sept. 30 at Navy).
Meanwhile, Stratton was named All-League for the first time in her career, garnering third team laurels. Stratton has served as the team’s starting center back, starting all 17 games and tallying a goal and assist. The Dublin, Ohio native scored her first-career goal at Delaware while recording an assist at St. John’s. In the final minutes against the Red Storm, Stratton made a key save on the goal line to help the Mountain Hawks preserve the 2-1 win and complete the weekend sweep against the Big East (also defeating Villanova two days earlier). Because of her efforts, Stratton was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week.
Wadsworth also earned third team All-Patriot League, her first-career All-League recognition. Wadsworth is tied for the team lead in goals with five while her 11 points are second on the Mountain Hawks. She has been strong down the stretch, owning seven points (three goals, one assist) over the last four regular season games. Wadsworth scored a goal in three straight games - at Lafayette, at Bucknell and vs. Loyola - while also assisting on what proved to be the game-winning goal against the Greyhounds. In nonleague action, Wadsworth scored the game-winning double overtime goal at Temple and game-tying goal at UMBC.
Following the regular season, Lehigh stands 9-4-4 overall and 5-2-2 in Patriot League play to earn the No. 5 seed in the Patriot League Tournament. The Mountain Hawks are set to travel to fourth-seeded Colgate on Tuesday, a team they tied 1-1 in the regular season. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on the Patriot League Network.
