Five Straight Wins For San José State
Fort Collins, Colo. --- For the second time in three Mountain West matches, the San José State women's soccer team came away with the game-winning goal in overtime. Friday it was senior striker Dorthe Hoppius who busted the scoreless tie in the second minute of overtime to give the Spartans (6-4-0, 3-0-0 MW) a 1-0 victory over Colorado State.
"It shows a lot of character in our team to go on the road and win a conference game in overtime," said Spartans head coach Lauren Hanson. "We stuck with our game plan of possessing the ball and then Didi came up big for us in overtime."
San José State extends its winning streak to five matches, including three straight to open Mountain West play. It's the longest winning streak since the team won six in a row during the 2009 season. Three straight wins to begin conference play matches the program's longest streak which was set in 2015 when SJSU went to the NCAA Tournament.
The game-winner was part of a set off of a free kick just outside the 18 on the right wing. Jamilecxth Becerra played the ball in front of the net and Hoppius was there with the right foot to poke it past the keeper inside the right post in the 92nd minute.
The match had been a stalemate between the two teams through full time. Colorado State (2-5-4, 0-1-2 MW) edged SJSU in shots, 14-13, and both teams had four shots on goal. Spartan keeper Paige Simoneau was there to save all four and came away with her third shutout of the season.
"Paige was fantastic today," said Hanson. "She played great and our back line was solid for the entire match."
San José State concludes the weekend on the road at Wyoming on Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m. (MT). Head to the schedule page for links to the live video feed and live stats.
