FLYERS TAKE 4-2 WIN OVER IPFW IN SEASON
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Dayton men’s soccer team opened the 2013 season with a 4-2 win at IPFW Sunday afternoon. Freshman Brian Richards netted two goals in his collegiate debut for the Flyers, including the game-winner in the 79th minute.
Senior Abe Keller took five shots on the afternoon, including three on-goal, assisting on a pair of goals as well for the Flyers. Dayton took 18 shots on the afternoon, eight on goal, to IPFW’s 12 (seven on). Fouls were nearing even at 13 miscues for the Mastodons to 11 for the Flyers.
The Flyers got on the board early in the contest with a goal from Richards in the sixth minute, his first collegiate goal. Keller was credited with the assist on the score as Dayton took the quick 1-0 lead.
The teams headed into the locker room at halftime with UD leading, 1-0. IPFW netted the equalizer just over minutes into the second period when the Mastodons’ Jacob Murphy found the back of the goal and was assisted by Corey Tom. Shortly after, a scuffle between IPFW’s Austin West and UD’s graduate student Eddie Jones resulted in a yellow and red card respectively.
IPFW took the lead in the 55th minute when Oscar Uyamadu scored his first goal of the season from Murphy and Jose Rodriguez. In the 59th minute, the Mastodons’ Kyle Ackerman was shown a yellow card, the team’s second of the half.
Junior Greg Enstone tied the match up in the 61st minute for the Flyers as sophomore Amass Amankona assisted on the game-tying goal. IPFW’s Drake Bowers was shown the contest’s third yellow card in the 65th minute.
Amankona had a great look in the 74th minute but the ball deflected off the post. Richards struck again in the 79th minute for the Flyers to put up the go-ahead goal for UD, which would prove to be the game-winner. Senior Victor Duru was credited with the assist. Amankona netted an insurance goal for the Flyers in the 84th minute and UD held on for the 4-2 win over IPFW.
Sophomore Chris Froschauer (1-0) earned the win at keeper for the Flyers after working the entire match in goal. He tallied five saves to two goals against.
Raphael Kotzock was charged with the loss in goal for the Mastodons. He also put in 90 minutes of work between the posts, collecting four saves to four goals against.
Murphy led the Mastodons with one goal and one assist on three shots. Uyamadu also took three shots on the day, two of which were on goal.
Dayton returns to action Friday, Sept. 6 against Northern Kentucky at home. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at UD’s Baujan Field.
