DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton women's soccer team congratulated the accomplishments of its five seniors on Saturday night with a dramatic 3-2 overtime win over Saint Louis.
Two of the three goals in the overtime win came from seniors.
Saint Louis took an early lead in the seventh minute when a cross to the Dayton six-yard box found an open Billiken forward Livi Logan-Wood for an uncontested volley into the back of the net.
The Flyers were down early 1-0, but controlled the tempo for the most part in the early stages of the game. Dayton had a number of scoring opportunities just narrowly miss or hit the post. Despite trailing, UD was aggressive offensively and keeping the ball in the Saint Louis third of the field.
After a 20-minute period of Dayton dominating possession, the Billikens managed a break on a counter that saw a long pass fall into the feet of Saint Louis striker Jenny Hummert who beat the back line of the Flyers. She drove the shot home to the bottom corner of the net to put the Billikens up 2-0 with just a few minutes remaining in the first half.
The two teams went into the locker room at halftime with the visitors holding a 2-0 advantage over the host Flyers.
At the start of the second half, Dayton took control once again and continued to fire shots at the Saint Louis goal. The Billiken goalkeeper, the goal posts, and the Saint Louis defense held strong though and deflected the Flyer attempts away from goal.
The Flyers finally struck in the 62nd minute when sophomore Ashley Campbell drove home a rebound off a Saint Louis save into the bottom of the net. Senior Juliana Libertin had the initial shot that was deflected by the goalkeeper into the feet of Campbell.
Dayton took little time before tying the game up at 2-2 in the 65th minute. Senior Stephanie Emery controlled a touch pass from freshman Erin O'Malley just outside the right side of the 18-yard box. She then curled a shot to the back post that perfectly landed inside the Billiken goal.
After 90 minutes, the score remained deadlocked at 2-2 as the game went into overtime.
The first overtime period was back-and-forth as both teams jockeyed for position. Dayton managed to pin the ball in the corner by Saint Louis' goal just five minutes into the first overtime and that is when the Flyers struck.
Senior Sarah Senoyuit stood near the back post where sophomore Nicole Waters lobbed a cross to, hoping for someone from Dayton to be on the receiving end. Senoyuit blasted a shot towards the far post and into the net for the game-winning goal.
The benches cleared after the golden goal as the Flyers celebrated the overtime victory on Senior Night.
The goal for Campbell was her 12th of the season while the goal for Emery was her ninth on the year. Senoyuit scored her first goal of the season and just the second of her career.
Dayton out-shot Saint Louis 36-8 on the game with 11 of those attempts on target for the Flyers.
The Flyers (10-4-1, 5-0-0 A-10) will play next on Oct. 27 at 12 p.m. when they host Fordham in the final home game of the 2013 season for Dayton.
