FLYERS WIN A-10 OPENER 4-0 OVER UMASS
AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Dayton women's soccer team downed Massachusetts 4-0 in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams. The two teams faced off in a driving rain storm that saturated the playing surface with standing water. It was a rematch of the 2011 A-10 Championship in which the Flyers won 5-1.
Freshman Ashley Campbell, sophomore Kelsey Smigel, senior Colleen Williams and junior Juliana Libertin each scored for the Flyers (7-3-0, 1-0-0 A-10). Williams and Libertin also each added an assist.
Junior Jordin Melchert had two saves to preserve the shutout for the Flyers, the second consecutive blanking for UD this season.
The Minutewomen drop to 5-6-0 overall and 0-1-0 in A-10 action. The Flyers outshot UMass 28-10, including 14-2 with shots on frame.
Campbell scored her sixth goal of the season in the 16th minute on assists from Libertin and Williams. Smigel notched her second goal of the season in the 32nd minute and UD held a 2-0 lead at the half.
Williams scored the eighth goal of her senior season in the 58th minute, hitting under the crossbar and into the goal. She has a league-leading 23 points (8 goals and 7 assists). Williams has 49 goals in her career and needs three to move into first all-time at UD.
Libertin scored her eighth goal of the season in the 66th minute to cap off the scoring for the Flyers. Libertin is second in the A-10 in points with 22 (8 goals and 6 assists). Williams and Libertin lead the Atlantic 10 in goals scored as well.
Dayton continues A-10 action at Rhode Island this Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m.
