FMU blank ERAU 3-0 as Sandmann scores early
DAYTONA BEACH, FL – Junior forward Levin Sandmann scored in the opening five minutes and Francis Marion University went on to claim a 3-0 season-opening win over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Thursday evening (Aug. 31) in men’s college soccer action.
FMU (1-0-0) will conclude its Sunshine State tour with a 7 p.m. match at Florida Tech on Saturday night.
Sandmann volleyed in a cross from senior defender Jevon Williams to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead at the 4:30 mark. Minutes later it seemed as though the Patriots had earned a penalty kick, but the referee ruled that the Eagle foul occurred just outside the box and awarded a free kick that was eventually cleared out by the Embry-Riddle defense.
Freshman Adrian Merino scored with 2:16 left before halftime to double the FMU advantage to 2-0. Senior midfielder Gaspard Mianne came up with an errant Eagle pass and assisted on the second tally.
Sophomore Jordan Dechere concluded the scoring when he dribbled from midfield down the left side and scored an unassisted goal at the 55:26 mark.
Embry-Riddle led in shots 17-9 and earned six corner kicks to the Patriots’ four.
FMU freshman goalkeeper Washington Bgoni made his first collegiate start and posted the shutout as he registered four saves. Richard Dearle made two stops in goal for the Eagles (0-1-0).
The victory avenges a 5-2 loss to the Eagles last season in Florence.
