FMU rally falls short in 3-2 road loss
CHATTANOOGA, TN – Francis Marion University rallied to tie the match with a pair of second-half goals, but Chattanooga freshman forward Monica Speth scored in the 76th minute to give the Mocs a 3-2 victory, Friday night (Oct. 18) in non-conference women’s soccer action.
Chattanooga (5-9-0) took a 2-0 advantage with goals in the 12th and 49th minutes before the Patriots rallied. FMU freshman defender Allie Duckworth scored her first career on an 8-yard shot in the 51st minute and junior Chanel Harris redirected a free kick into the netting at the 63:14 mark to deadlock the contest. Senior midfielder Yasmin Bunter assisted on both Patriot scores.
Harris leads the squad with four goals scored this season, while Bunter owns a team-high six assists.
However, the FMU rally was spoiled at the 75:11 mark when Speth scored off an assist from Crystal Mackezyk with a shot that deflected in off the left post.
Francis Marion outshot the Mocs 21-18 and led 5-2 in corner kicks. Harris led the Patriots with four shots.
FMU sophomore goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry tallied seven saves, while Chattanooga’s Taylor Mangrum made nine stops, including the Patriots’ final attempt to force overtime – a shot by freshman Caroline Edmonds with 1:09 remaining.
FMU will play at Samford University on Sunday at 3 p.m. (Eastern Time).
