FMU suffers heart-breaking 4-3 loss
FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University junior forward Chanel Harris scored a pair of goals and senior midfielder Yasmin Bunter tied the match with a late score, but Davidson College answered with the deciding score only 3:44 from the final horn to grab a 4-3 non-conference victory over the Patriots, Sunday afternoon (Oct. 13) in women’s soccer action.
Francis Marion will play at Chattanooga on Friday evening at 7 p.m. and at Samford University on Sunday at 3 p.m. The next home match for the Patriots will be Oct. 25, against Western Carolina University at 7 p.m.
Trailing 3-1 at halftime, Harris scored at 71:44 and Bunter at 79:09 to knot the score at 3-3. Bunter assisted on Harris’ tally with a pass from the midfield. Harris settled the ball and her shot from 16 yards out eluded the hard-charging Davidson goalkeeper Renae Cairns. Bunter’s score came from 15 yards out and deflected off the hands of Cairns as she dove to her right. That sequence began with a Sandy Odembo corner kick and a failed clearance by the Wildcats’ defense.
However, Davidson (5-7-3) answered back with freshman Kate Joss pounding in a goal from 13 yards out after FMU sophomore goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry made a save on a shot by Julia Singley.
O’Berry finished the match with seven saves, while Davidson starter Lauren Skorb made two stops, before being replaced by Cairns at halftime.
Davidson outshot FMU 16-9 and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Davidson took a 1-0 advantage in the 20th minute when freshman Ashley Finke scored on a bending shot from 20 yards out in the close right wing. The Patriots responded only 1:21 later with a tying score. Bunter played a long ball down the right sideline to junior forward Elizabeth Asare. Asare dribbled into the 18-yard box and crossed the ball to Harris, who tapped the ball into the net from five yards away.
Finke gave the lead back to the Wildcats with a rebound goal in the 32nd minute and Joss scored on an arching 20-yard effort in the 41st minute to give Davidson the 3-1 lead at intermission.
