FMU’s Mannes blanks UNCP 2-0
PEMBROKE, NC – Sophomores Levin Sandmann and Oliver Drakenhammar scored to back a four-save performance by sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Mannes as Francis Marion University blanked UNC Pembroke 2-0, Wednesday night (Oct. 5) in Peach Belt Conference men's soccer action.
Francis Marion improves to 4-6-1 and moves into third place in the PBC with a 3-2-0 mark, while UNCP drops to 4-5-0 and 2-1-0. It was FMU’s first win in Pembroke since a 2-0 victory on Oct. 15, 2009.
The Patriots were to have played host to defending conference champion Young Harris College on Saturday afternoon, but that match has been postponed by Hurricane Matthew. The next scheduled match for FMU is at home on Wednesday against USC Aiken at 5 p.m. on Hartzler Field.
Sandmann tallied his fourth goal in the past two road matches with a score at the 22:44 mark. Both freshman Mathias Hjort and Drakenhammar assisted on the close-range goal.
Sandmann returned the favor in the 51st minute with an assist on Drakenhammar’ score. Sandmann’s free kick was stopped by UNCP goalkeeper Lucas Gusmao, but the ball rebounded to Drakenhammar who quickly knocked it into the netting.
Both players now have seven goals on the season for the Patriots.
Mannes recorded his second shutout of 2016 and the eighth of his young career. Gusmao finished with six saves.
UNCP outshot Francis Marion 14-13 with six of the Braves’ attempts coming in the 18 minutes. FMU earned seven of the match’s eight corner kicks.
Sandmann paced Francis Marion with seven shots, five of which were on frame.
