Fontenot shines in Lamar victory
Oct. 14, 2012
BEAUMONT, Texas - Bailey Fontenot made 11 saves, many of the spectacular variety, to lead the Lamar Lady Cardinals to a 1-0 win over visiting Northwestern State in a Southland Conference women's soccer game Sunday for their fourth consecutive victory.
"Bailey was lights out today," Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. "We were outplayed, but Bailey kept us in the game. She was just tremendous."
Lamar (8-7-1 overall, 4-1 conference) remained unbeaten at home (6-0-1) this season despite an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal by Northwestern State (5-9-1, 0-4-1).
"We've had games where we've outplayed our opponent only to lose," Cervantes said. "Today, we were able to overcome adversity. I'm very proud of this team for that."
The game was scoreless until Lamar's Kristin Bos scored with 10:37 remaining in regulation, taking a pass from Jannet Hernandez and depositing it behind Northwestern State goalkeeper Brooke Bourbonais for her eighth goal of the season.
After that, it was all Fontenot, who made seven saves in the second half to register her fifth shutout of the season. Fontenot improved her goals-against average in Southland play to 0.40 and her save percentage to .951. Over the last 405:26, Fontenot has allowed just one goal, that coming on a penalty kick in Lamar's 2-1 win over Central Arkansas on Friday.
The Lady Cardinals open a two-game road swing when they visit Oral Roberts at 7 p.m. Friday before traveling to conference-leading Stephen F. Austin at 1 p.m. Sunday.
"These will be two very tough road games," Cervantes said. "We have to do a better job of controlling the ball than we did today. WE just have to settle down and play our game."
