Fordham Falls to Eastern Michigan
Behind goals from Angela Vultaggio and Emily Dzik, the Eastern Michigan Eagles defeated the Fordham Rams, 2-0, in the women’s soccer opener for both teams on Friday at Oestrike Stadium in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Fordham got off to a good start, registering four of the first six shots of the game over the opening 20 minutes. The Rams’ first offering was a shot on goal by Jessica Widmann, but was stopped by Eastern Michigan goalkeeper Megan McCabe.
The Eagles netted the opening goal of the contest in the 25th minute. Angela Vultaggio took a pass from Molli Krick and scored on a shot from the top of the box for a 1-0 lead, beating the Rams’ starting goalkeeper Ally White.
The score remained that way at the end of the first half, as each team had four shots with the Eagles having the lone corner kick of the period.
In the second half, Eastern Michigan put the pressure on to get another tally on the board, registering four shots and two corner kicks over the first 20 minutes. Then on the third corner kick of the half, Emily Dzik scored to the back post off Madison Hirsch’s corner for a 2-0 lead in the 67th minute, past Fordham keeper Megan Fitzgerald, who entered the game at halftime.
Fordham had four shots over the final 22 minutes to try to get on board, but three were just off target, while Ivana Lahcanski’s effort in the 74th minute was stopped by McCabe, giving the Eagles a 2-0 decision.
In net, McCabe recorded two saves for the shutout, while White and Fitzgerald each played 45 minutes for the Rams with Fitzgerald making two saves.
The Fordham women’s soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, August 24th, when the Rams host Manhattan College for the annual “Battle of the Bronx” at Jack Coffey Field, beginning at 5:00 PM.
