Fordham Takes 4th Straight Win at Columbi
New York, N.Y. - (September 18, 2015) - In a physical contest where chances were limited, the Fordham Rams capitalized when they needed to, getting a goal from Jessica Widmann in the 68th minute to pull out a 1-0 win over the Columbia Lions at Commisso Soccer Stadium.
With the win, Fordham improved to 6-2-0 on the season and have now won four straight contests, while Columbia fell to 3-3-0. The victory also marked the Rams’ first win over the Lions since 2011.
The Rams controlled most of the play in the first half, outshooting Columbia, 7-3, with Fordham’s best chance coming off a free kick by Kristina Maksuti that sailed high from just outside the 18-yard box.
Fordham then cracked the scoreboard in the 68th minute on a quick give-and-go play inside the box. Maksuti got the ball just inside the box and laid a quick pass to a streaking Jessica Widmann, coming across the box. Widmann was able to outrun her defender to the penalty spot and beat the keeper to the right side of goal for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Columbia almost had the equalizer on a shot from Stephanie Shin in the 81st minute, but was denied by a diving save to the right post by Fordham keeper Megan Fitzgerald.
Fordham completed the clean sheet over the final nine minutes, as Fitzgerald made two saves for her third shutout of the season.
The Fordham women’s soccer team will have their final non-conference game of the season on Sunday, September 20th, as the Rams play at Hofstra, beginning at 2:00 PM.
