Fordham Women’s Soccer Blanks Vermont, 1-0
For the second straight contest, the Fordham Rams were in another tight match-up on Friday with the score tied going into the final ten minutes. Once again, the Rams were up to the challenge, as Kate McDonnell scored on a header in the 85th minute to post a 1-0 win over the Vermont Catamounts at Jack Coffey Field.
With the win, Fordham improves to 2-1-0 on the season, while Vermont fell to 2-1-0.
Vermont opened the game with the first few offensive opportunities, receiving five corner kicks over the first five minutes. The Rams’ defense though was stout, and did not allow a shot on any of the corner kicks.
The first shot of the game did not come until the 30th minute, as Jessica Silverman had a long distance attempt that was easily handled by Fordham goalkeeper Ally White.
After a scoreless first half, Fordham got some offense rolling early in the second half. Ivana Lahcanski had a pair of shots over the first ten minutes, the second of which Vermont goalkeeper Ally Ramos had to come up with a save.
About eight minutes later, Maria Lorena Canicatti almost got Fordham on the board. She took a low line drive shot that went off the crossbar and was cleared.
The Rams finally broke the tie in the 85th minute as Fordham was awarded a corner kick, taken by Bryce Debolt. Debolt’s corner sailed into the box and was headed down to the right of goal. Carlie Wagner was able to control the ball and put a cross back in, where Kate McDonnell headed home her first goal of the season into the top left corner of the net.
Fordham was able to complete the clean sheet for the win, as goalkeeper Megan Fitzgerald, who came in at halftime, made three saves to earn her second win of the year.
The Fordham women’s soccer team will finish off its three-match homestand on Sunday, August 31st, when the Rams host Maine at 1:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field.
