Fresh Start
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – What an opening weekend for Siena’s Women’s Soccer freshmen. Tara Sobierajski was the hero Friday and classmate Andrea Pereira scored the game-winner Sunday as Siena defeated Binghamton 2-1 at Siena Field.
Pereira came off the bench and in the 71st minute tallied her first collegiate goal. Following several deflections and misplays in front, the ball found the open freshman midfielder on the left side who lofted it underneath the right crossbar capping a 2-0 opening weekend for the Saints.
Senior captain Taylor D’Alfonso had opened the scoring for the Saints in the 10th minute. Fellow captain Brittany Pfaff played the ball back to classmate Kayla Mancusi who lofted it over the top to the streaking D’Alfonso who buried it inside the right post.
Binghamton rallied to knot the score in the 23rd minute when Kaitlyn Martin finished a long pass over the top in close. The Bearcats controlled the middle portion of the match, but could never take the lead.
Taylor Booth made five saves for Siena which improved to an incredible 22-1-1 non-conference home matches dating back to the start of the 2007 season. Gaby Gold played the second half in goal for the Bearcats making five saves, but was saddled with the loss in her squad’s season opener.
Siena now has a chance to continue its hot start and open 3-0 for the first time since the magical 2010 MAAC Championship Season when the Saints won their first 12 matches. Siena takes to the road for the first time in 2013 when they face Colgate Thursday night at 7.
