Freshmen Duo Leads Huskers to 2-0 Win
Lincoln - Freshmen Jaylyn Odermann and Katie Kraeutner led the Nebraska soccer team (1-3-0) to its first win of the 2012 season on Sunday afternoon at the Nebraska Soccer Field with a 2-0 shutout of the New Mexico Lobos. Odermann notched both her first career goal and assist on the day, while Kraeutner added her first career goal.
On the box score it looked like an even game, but the Husker offense helped out its defense by keeping the ball in New Mexico territory for most of the afternoon. The Lobos were aggressive though when they crossed midfield with six shots on goal, but NU junior goalie Emma Stevens stopped every attempt to record her fourth career shutout.
Even though New Mexico got off 10 shots in the first half compared to four shots from Nebraska, the Lobos were unable to get on the board, as Stevens tallied four saves. The Huskers took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a the playmaking ability of Odermann and Kraeutner.
The Huskers broke the 0-0 tie at 38:34 when Odermann put a perfect pass into the box from nearly 40 yards out and Kraeutner timed her attack just right with a header for her first career goal.
Odermann then added a goal at the 55:15 mark in the second half on an assist from junior Stacy Bartels. With Bartels dribbling away from the goal, she slipped the ball to Odermann as she passed Bartels and the Lobos' defender stayed with Bartels, leaving Odermann an open look from 15 yards away into the top right corner of the goal.
After playing its last three games in Lincoln, Nebraska hits the road next weekend for a pair of non-conference games. The Huskers first visit Waco, Texas, on Friday, Aug. 31, for a 7 p.m. with the Baylor Bears, before then traveling to Cincinnati, Ohio, for a Noon meeting with the Cincinnati Bearcats on Sunday, Sept. 2.
