Freshmen Shine in Adrian's 6-0 Shutout Over Heidelberg
ADRIAN, Mich. - In a make-up game at Performance Stadium, the Adrian College women's soccer team blanked visiting Heidelberg University, 6-0, on Labor Day Monday (Sept. 5). The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but due to lightning storms threatening the Adrian area, the game was postponed.
Four of the six goals were off a foot of a freshman. The Lady Bulldogs improve to 2-0, while the Student Princes drop to 1-1.
"We definitely walk away with a lot of positives from a team performance like that," said head coach Ali Alamdari. "It was great to have the contributions come from so many different players and areas of the field."
Erin Weide scored the lone goal of the first half when she found the lower left corner of the net at the 9:16 mark. It marked Weide's first goal of her collegiate career. 2010 First-Team All-MIAA performer Sam Barker earned the assist.
In the second half, Adrian came out rolling. At the 48:49 mark, Barker picked up her second assist of the game when she found Ellery Karsten in the middle of the box. Karsten then grazed the crossbar from 11 yards out and it cross the line to put the Bulldogs up 2-0.
Barker added on to Adrian's lead with a goal (57:59) off a corner kick from Patti Vaassen.
Less than 10 minutes later, Weide scored her second goal of the game when Carmina Lizyness and Kellie Irwin provided assists. Irwin found a streaking Lizyness on the left side of the field and she carried the ball down towards the goal line. Lizyness then slipped a perfect pass to Weide across the box.
With 15 minutes left in regulation, Lizyness showed speed and endurance as she made a long run to the right wing and netted a goal in the low left corner from 16 yards out. Aly Masciovecchio was credited with the assist.
Also scoring was Haley Smith in the 77th minute of play unassisted after dribbling between defenders before firing home the ball.
Adrian goalie Chayna Wallace earned the shutout win with one save on the day. Wallace also stopped a penalty kick in the first half to preserve the shutout.
The Bulldogs outshot Heidelberg, 26-3.
"To be fair to Heidelberg, they weren't playing at full strength so we don't want to get ahead of ourselves," said Alamdari. "We've got two huge games against teams with national success coming up this weekend, so we need to stay focused on training this week and preparing for the next challenge."
Next up is at Wittenberg on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 11:00 am.
