Frustrating Finish in Sunday Defeat to NDNU
HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay was on the short end of a 1-0 result to Notre Dame de Namur on Sunday evening inside Pioneer Stadium. NDNU's Rebecca Yim scored off a long range free kick nearing the final minute of the first half to provide the lone score of the match.
Cal State East Bay (1-1-0) had its chances outshooting Notre Dame de Namur (2-0-0) 15-7 overall, including a 7-2 advantage in the second half. Argonauts goalkeeper Abigail Cebrero withstood the constant Pioneer pressure making 10 saves in the victory.
"We played an incredibly strong second half. We made some adjustments and came out strong," praised Head Coach Amy Gerace of her squad. "It was not from a lack of effort. We just couldn't find the back of the net. (NDNU)'s goalkeeper came up with a lot of big time saves and deserves credit."
As the first half ticked away the Pioneers committed a foul approximately 35 yards out from goal. Yim stepped up from outside the left post and lofted her strike over the outstretched arm of East Bay goalkeeper Selena Braun for the score.
It is the only goal that Braun has allowed in her 180 minutes this season. She made four saves in full time including a diving attempt on her opening stop to keep the Argonauts scoreless early on.
Cal State East Bay placed 10-of-15 shots on target. Rachel Armstrong led the way with all three of her shots forcing a save from Cebrero.
"Defensively as a unit, we've done a great job. We lacked a bit of discipline at times but overall we played well together," said Gerace. "At the end of the day, this is still a great team. We will continue to build and improve as we get closer to league play."
Cal State East Bay will head to Nampa, Idaho for a 2-game road trip starting with Central Washington (0-1-0) on Thursday, Sept. 11.
