Gaels Announce 2013 Recruiting Class
NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College men's soccer head coach Fernando Barboto announced his 2013 recruiting class. Eleven new student-athletes will don the Maroon & Gold in the fall.
Mike Holzer, a transfer from UNC Greensboro, is a 5-8 midfielder from Merzchule HS in Franklin, Germany. He also played for the Stuttgart Kickers Academy team.
Barboto on Holzer: "Michael is a very technical and skillful midfielder with college soccer experience. I believe him to be an important player in this recruiting class."
Marley McLain, a 6-3 defender, attended Enrico Fermi HS in Enfield, CT, and also played for the FSA United Soccer Club.
Barboto on McLain: "Marley has great speed, size and college athleticism. We look to develop him into the future of our back line".
Alex Ramos, a forward, attended Colts Neck HS in Colts Neck, NJ and played for NJSA. He was also a member of the US U14 National Team
Barboto on Ramos: "Alex is superbly quick with and without the ball. He is clever and savvy on the field in addition to being a very unbalancing one-on-one player."
Shakhai Trott, a 5-8 defender from South Kent Prep School in South Kent, CT and played for FC Westchester Academy. He is also a member of the U17 Bermuda National Team.
Barboto on Trott: "Shakhai had great agility, balance, and speed. He is built to cover the flanks from top to bottom"
Mike Gottlinger, a 6-0 defender from Fossil Ridge HS in Fort Collins, CO and played for Colorado Rapids Academy.
Barboto on Gottlinger: "Michael has shown great versatility for his club team playing across the back the line. This will enable him to compete for any position in the back four.
Jonathon Proctor, a 6-3 defender, attended Half Hollow Hills West HS in Dix Hills, NY played for Albertson Academy.
Barboto on Proctor: "Jonathon has the raw athleticism needed to be a stronger defender at the Division I level. We believe with further positional development, he can be a part of the future of Iona's back line.
Aaron Potter, a 5-7 forward from Monroe, NJ, attended Monroe Township HS and played for the Matchfit Soccer Academy.
Barboto on Potter: "Aaron has the speed, power and ablitity to push by defenders. These valuable tools will help him be a strong asset to the team's offensive attack"
Jannick Martens, a 6-1 forward, attended Alstergymnasium Henstedt-Ulzburg HS and played for FC St. Pauli Academy.
Barboto on Martens: "Jannick has track speed and excellent one-on-one ability in the open field. We look forward to Jannick helping our attack."
Taylor Dempsey, a 6-2 forward, attended Owen J Roberts HS in Pottstown, PA and played for Hicksville Soccer Club as well as Philidaelphia Union Academy
Barboto on Dempsey: "Taylor has the power, strength and speed to have a great career at Iona. We expect him to come in and make an impact statistically. He is a traditional No. 9".
Brendan Reardon, a 5-6 midfielder, attended St. Anthony's HS in South Huntington, NY and Lake Grove United.
Barboto on Reardon: "Brendan has a great ability to dribble at speed, improvise in small spaces and a work-ethic and passion that will propel him to a strong career at Iona."
Oscar Gonzales, a 5-9 Midfielder attended Clifton HS in Clifton, NJ and plays for the Red Bulls Academy Team.
Barboto on Gonzales: "Oscar has the speed, power, technical ability and skillfulness to be an immediate impact player for us. We expect a lot from him."
