GCU Comes Up Short Against South Dakota
The South Dakota (4-1) women's soccer team scored three unanswered second half goals to top Grand Canyon (0-3-1), 3-1, Friday night at GCU Soccer Field. The Antelopes got on the board first in the 67th minute, but the Coyotes scored three goals before the final horn to secure their fourth win of the season.
"After scoring a fantastic goal, we stopped playing," said head coach Stevie Gill. "We made a couple of mistakes at the back that cost us the game."
In the first 45 minutes of action, neither team was able to find the back of the net, as Canyon keeper Blakely Fraasch made four saves to keep South Dakota off the board. The Lopes held a distinct advantage in the shots category in the opening half, outshooting the Coyotes 12-6. Sirena Seymour led the offensive charge, firing six first half shots. A pair of Seymour's shot attempts just missed, hitting the crossbar.
Twenty one minutes into the second half Seymour struck from afar to hand the Lopes the 1-0 lead. The freshman forward was assisted by Shannon Costello from midfield. The goal marked the first of Seymour's career in a GCU uniform.
Taylor Nivala scored South Dakota's first two goals and Colleen Reeves gave South Dakota its third goal in the 85th minute to put the Coyotes up 3-1. Canyon continued to apply offensive pressure, but was unable to notch another goal, ending the contest 3-1.
Seymour shined for GCU, recording nine shots on the night, with two of those being on goal. Gabriella Rojas-Robinson, Joanna Lagunas, and Ashly Hilfer contributed with two shots apiece. Costello and Maria Monterroso tallied one shot each.
"In order to win games at this level, we need to stay focused for the full 90 minutes and minimize our mistakes and take our chances," added Gill.
The Antelopes will travel to Flagstaff next weekend for contests with Southern Utah on Friday and NAU on Sunday. Fans can find game times and additional information on the weekend at www.gculopes.com.
