GCU Women's Soccer Wins at Colorado State
The Grand Canyon University women's soccer team (1-3-0) picked up their first win of the 2013 season, a 1-0 victory over Colorado State University (1-3-0) at the Fort Collins Soccer Complex in Fort Collins, Colo. It was the first game ever played at the complex as the Rams are competing in their inaugural season for women's soccer.
"It is nice to get a win after playing so well in previous games and not getting results," said head coach Stevie Gill. "Our freshmen were given an opportunity this evening to play the majority of the game and they took full advantage of it. We had eight freshmen on the field most of the game and they really stepped up."
The Rams outshot GCU, 12-5, although the teams were nearly evenly matched in shots on goal with CSU holding the slight 5-4 advantage. Martine Gjennestad led the offense with two shots for the 'Lopes, but Cassie Beckwith's lone shot in the second half proved to be the game-winner.
Gjennestad, Cierra Valdez, and Jessica Barton also recorded a shot on goal in the game.
Cat Lena and Daryl Bradley shared time in goal for the 'Lopes as GCU recorded its first shutout of the season. Bradley was credited with three saves in her first appearance in 2013, while Lena added two to her resume.
The teams were locked in a scoreless tie following the first 45 minutes, with the Rams outshooting GCU 7-1. CSU also held the narrow advantage in shots on goal (2-1), but Lena stopped both Rams shots that were on target.
Less than five minutes into the second half, Beckwith scored the first goal of the season for GCU, and her first career goal with the 'Lopes, after finding the back of the net on a cross from Riley Richardson.
"Cassie scored a great goal and was composed throughout the game, while Daryl played excellent in the net before coming off with an injury," Gill said.
Bradley picked up a clutch save in the 81st minute following a GCU foul, preserving the 1-0 lead for the 'Lopes.
CSU came on strong in the final 10 minutes, taking three shots in an attempt to equalize the score, but GCU's defense spoiled the home-opener for the Rams.
"Brooke Horvatich, Riley, Joanna Lagunas, and Jessica really played well for us," Gill added. "Shannon Costello was the best player on the pitch for us and dominated the midfield, so I was very happy for her as she is a great kid. Youtful exuberance was the name of the game."
The 'Lopes will remain in Colorado for a contest at Air Force on Sunday at 11 a.m. (Arizona time). Fans can follow the action via live video and stats by visiting www.gculopes.com.
"We will enjoy the victory tonight and focus our efforts on Sunday's match at Air Force."
