George Mason Edges Monarchs, 1-0 On Second Half Goal
FAIRFAX, VA-- Taylor Morgan's second half goal lifted the Patriots of George Mason to a 1-0 victory over 11th ranked Old Dominion Saturday night. Mason is now 4-2-2 overall and 1-0 in the CAA, while ODU is 4-1 overall and 0-1 in the CAA.
"Welcome to the CAA. You have to battle the entire match in this league. I think George Mason was a little more agressive than we were tonight.George Mason is definitely one of the top teams in our league." - ODU head coach Alan Dawson.
Mason got on the scoreboard with 26:32 remining in the match after an ODU foul in the box. Taylor Morgan's penalty kick was stopped by ODU's goalkeeper Victor Francoz, but Morgan got the rebound and fired it back in from about four yards away for the goal.
Francoz, a junior made eight saves on the night for the Monarchs. Fellow Monarch defenders Ryan Oakesand Tommy Webb also made crucial stops. Mason outshot ODU, 14-12 overall and 9-2 on shots on goal.
ODU had its chances throughout the match. Chris Harmon's shot with eight minutes left hit the crossbar, Yannick Smith'sfirst half shot was high and late in the game Hopkinson and Vaughan had close shots blocked.
ODU returns to action Tuesday night in Chapel Hill, NC against fourth ranked North Carolina at 7 p.m. The Tar Heels defeated Virginia 3-0 on Friday night.
