Gilbert's golden goal gives Heidelberg the W
BOX SCORE
CINCINNATI – Coming off of a double-overtime defeat to Earlham, the Heidelberg University women's soccer team flipped the script this time around. A late goal by Mount St. Joseph forcing the Student Princes to head to overtime, as well as heading late into the second overtime period still tied, the match looked to be heading towards a tie. Senior Rachel Gilbert did not allow that to happen, however, as she found the back of the net for the game-winning goal with less than a minute to play, giving the Student Princes the 2-1 victory.
The first period was a defensive battle, with the two teams trading shots but neither was able to beat the opposing keeper. There were only five shots in the entire period, with Heidelberg holding the slight edge with three.
The second half was a different story, as the Student Princes got off to a quick start when sophomoreAlexandra Sivec found the back of the net to give Heidelberg the 1-0 advantage. That lead looked like it was going to hold up until a clutch goal by the Lions with just two minutes to play tied up the match and sent it to overtime.
The first 10-minute overtime period saw neither team get a shot off, as the Student Princes were called for offsides twice.
With just 25 seconds left to play in the final overtime period, Kristen Keenan found Gilbert to break the tie, sending the 'Berg home with a well-earned victory.
Heidelberg out-shot the home Lions 12-8 in the contest with eight of their coming on goal with just four for Mount St. Joseph.
Christina Neal led the Student Princes with three shots in the contest, while goalkeeper Kenzie Lundqvistrecorded three saves, including one early in the second overtime period.
With the win, Heidelberg improved to 2-5-1 on the year. They will look to ride that momentum as they head home for their next match at home on Saturday, September 27th against Hiram College. That match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.
